FARMINGTON — A Brunswick man appeared in court Wednesday, a day after a state police trooper said he caught him taking jewelry from a home on Mile Hill Road in New Sharon, officials said.

Maine State Police Trooper Randall Keaten arrested William H. Poore, 38, also known as William Tozier, on Tuesday on charges of burglary, theft and violating conditions of release. Keaten said Poore was inside the home where a burglar alarm had alerted police.

Keaten said Wednesday morning before Poore’s appearance in Farmington District Court that when he arrived at the house he found the electric meter pulled off the house and the telephone line cut.

There was a Dodge Dakota pickup truck running in the driveway and it was loaded with electronics, including computers and flat screen televisions, he said.

Keaton said he went into the house and heard things being thrown around and saw drawers torn open. He waited, surprising Poore when he came into the room wearing rubber gloves and holding a jewelry box, he said.

Poore has a lengthy history of burglaries, Keaten said.

Poore was on a stay of execution for a two-year sentence to the Maine Department of Corrections for a theft conviction in Cumberland County, Franklin County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson told Judge Valerie Stanfill on Wednesday. Poore was to begin serving that sentence  Nov. 11, he said.

Stanfill set bail at $50,000 cash or $500,000 worth of real estate.

State police received a second report of a burglary on Mile Hill Road in New Sharon later Tuesday, Keaten said. The items stolen matched the description of what was found in the truck in the driveway, he said. Charges were pending in that case Wednesday.
