Our power is our vote

Nothing is more fundamental to democracy than the right to vote. One person — one vote.

In January, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the restriction on corporations using their money to sway federal elections and ruled that companies have a right to spend as much as they wish to persuade voters.

The court’s conservative bloc said corporations have the same First Amendment rights as individuals, and that the government may not stop corporations from spending freely to influence the outcome of elections.

While corporations gain power, here in Maine, “we the people” lost with the elimination of Election Day voter registration, which has conveniently worked for 38 years. The state already has laws against voter fraud and it is ridiculous to take away voting rights for speculative and unfounded fraud claims.

As Maine citizens, our power is our vote. Let’s get it back by voting yes on Question 1.
