AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A coalition supporting Maine’s same-day voter registration law says newly released reports support the policy of letting people sign up as late as Election Day.
The Protect Maine Votes/Yes on 1 campaign says reports from government agencies, research institutions and universities underscore the benefits of same-day registration.
One of the reports, released Monday by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, says states with same-day registration have consistently have higher turnouts than states without, and the top five states for voter turnout were all election-day registration states.
Protect Maine Votes supports repeal of a new Maine law that requires registration at least two business days before the election. Supporters say that law helps prevent voter fraud.
