100 years ago, 1911

By flying from Pittsfield, Mass., in the balloon “Springfield” to the farm of H. B. Estes, Auburn, where he made a forced descent early Tuesday morning, H. Percy Shearman of Hackensack, N. J., completed the longest flight ever made in New England by an aeronaut, unaccompanied. He was unconscious when the first to arrive reached the basket, but later recovered his strength sufficiently to start for his home.

50 years ago, 1961

An open house for Auburn teachers will take place this afternoon at the new Edward Little High School on The Franklin.

Schools Supt. Lewis E. Webber and Principal Arnold G. Westerberg said the affair will start as soon as the teachers are through with their respective classes.

ELHS teachers will be at the school to greet the other teachers of the Auburn system and student guides will be on hand to show the visitors through the new 1,100-student school.

25 years ago, 1986

RUMFORD — Approximately 600 of Local 900 United Paperworkers International Union voted by a 2-1 margin Friday night to hold a secret ballot election this weekend on Boise Cascade Corp.’s final contract offer.

During a two-hour closed door meeting at Rumford High School, individuals and small groups of disgruntled workers left at various stages, but most returned when the issues finally came to a vote. The vote on the contract will be held at the local’s Rumford office Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.
