FARMINGTON — State Police say a 12-year-old Connecticut girl was killed Wednesday morning after a tractor- trailer truck struck a mini-van on Route 2 in Farmington.

The truck’s trailer, loaded with saw dust, struck the rear of the van, killing Tess Meisel of Westport, Conn., who was sitting in the rear seat, Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a release.

Two other children sitting elsewhere in the van, along with both drivers were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington with non life threatening injuries, he said.

The two children are 15-year-old Samantha Hollender and 13-year old Samantha Gaivao, both from Connecticut, he said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer is Charles Willey, 53, of Dexter. The van driver is 23-year-old Charles Powell from Colebrook, Conn., he said.

The van is owned by a Y camp in Colebrook and was traveling from Acadia National Park to a park in Vermont.

A team of state troopers, working with Farmington Police, are investigating the crash, including members of the State Police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit . The crash took place on Route 2, near the intersection of Route 4. The truck is owned by Linkletter Trucking of Athens. Following the collision with the van, the tractor-trailer then overturned, spilling the load of wood chips onto the ground. The cause of crash remains under investigation and a representative from the district attorney’s office was also at the crash site.
