PARIS — Recently the Paris Cape Historical Society has been given an 1882 account of a trip to Gettysburg and other places of note written by Oliver G. Curtis who served in the 17th Maine Regiment of Volunteers in Company C, and later in Company D. It is a thrilling account of his recollections 26 years later of that terrible battle of July 2 and 3 so many years ago.

One other soldier in that same regiment of note from the Paris area was Gustavus C. Pratt of Company C, later in Company D, who was given the rank of captain. His Civil War diary of 1864 tells of his visit one year after, at Gettysburg. Among his papers are tintypes, lists of soldiers, pension papers and other items of note.

These accounts and documents will be shared by Ben Conant, curator of the society, in the program for the Paris Cape Historical Society meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the museum at 77 High St., South Paris.

All are welcome, and refreshments will be served. Any descendants of Curtis and Pratt are welcome to attend the meeting, which is handicapped accessible.
