RUMFORD — The Mahoosuc Land Trust will debut a Gourmet Hike on Saturday, Aug. 20, up Whitecap Mountain. It will be an annual event.

Participants are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at the Rumford Whitecap Trailhead on East Andover Road. It’s a moderately strenuous, 6-mile round-trip hike.

Each hiker is asked to bring a gourmet dish to share with other hikers. Gourmet is anything beyond gorp — good ol’ raisins and peanuts or trail mix — or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

“Put your creative gourmet hat on and bring your creation with you,” Jim Mitchell, executive director, said in a recent report.

Hikers are also asked to bring eating utensils, a plate, beverage, water, snack, and bug and sun protection. Participants are asked to contact the trust at 824-3806 or info@mahoosuc.org so they know how many to expect.

* 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 3 — Jordan Brook in Riley Township. Hike/bushwhack to old-growth forest, a mile to mile and a half on a woods road, and then the same distance via a steep bushwhack into the forest. The trip is limited to 15 hikers who must contact the trust to go.

* 9:30 a.m. Oct. 1 — First Mountain, Shelburne, N.H. A moderately strenuous loop hike of about 4 miles up and over First Mountain and onto Middle Mountain. There are views of the Presidentials, Evans Notch and into the Mahoosuc Mountains. Refreshments will follow at First Mountain House. Participants are asked to call the trust for directions.

Later in October, there will be a Mount Zircon hike.

The Mahoosuc Land Trust is a community land trust encouraging public interest in conservation in central Oxford County and eastern Coos County in New Hampshire. It supports a balance of growth and preservation and emphasizes sustainable and traditional land use.
