Open mic

AUBURN — The Pleasant Note Coffeehouse will present an Open Mic/Poetry Slam at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the First Universalist Church. For more than five years, this free monthly event has drawn people of all ages from the L/A community to share the spirituality of song, music, spoken word and dance. Trail fundraiser

LEWISTON — David B. Field, a retired University of Maine professor of forest resources, has written a book about Maine’s Appalachian Trail, and has offered copies of the book to the Maine Appalachian Trail Club to be sold as a fundraiser. All proceeds from book sales through MATC will be used for trail work.

“Images of America: Along Maine’s Appalachian Trail” illustrates the rich history of the trail’s rugged mountains and vast forests. Black-and-white images in the book come primarily from the MATC archives, the Maine State Library and the author’s personal files.

Dementia care

LEWISTON — There are still openings in the Maine Savvy Caregiver Project 12-hour training program for family caregivers of people with dementia. There is no cost to attend.

Objectives are to develop a sense of mastery in the caregiving role and how to care for yourself; how to effectively interact with loved one and manage challenging behaviors; and to learn what dementia is and how it affects personality and behavior.

Participation in this training includes participation in a research project to evaluate the program by completing pre- and post-surveys.

Classes with openings still available include SeniorsPlus Education Center, 8 Falcon Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Aug. 15, 22, 29 and Sept. 12, 19 and 26.

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free organic workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. ‘Back to the Future’ will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at CMMC, 12 High St., Conference Room H.

Presenter C. Waite Maclin, owner of Pastor Chuck Orchards, will discuss the organic movement and recovering for ourselves and our children what our ancestors knew and practiced in their diets and lives. Resources and sensible decision making will also be covered.
