PORTLAND — A fire in a three-story apartment building in Portland, Maine, led to several dramatic rescues, with some people saving themselves by escaping through windows.
Portland firefighters used a ladder to rescue a woman from the third-floor apartment unit on Sherman Street, while others escaped through window and lowered a baby to neighbors waiting below.
The fire was reported at 2 p.m. Friday and was quickly extinguished.
The Portland Press Herald says one woman said she was hanging from a second-floor window sill before firefighters were able to lower her to safety.
