HALLOWELL — Spectrum Generations Family Caregiver Support Program is providing  six-week Maine Savvy Caregiver training this summer at its Cohen Community Center, 22 Town Farm Rd.

Based on the idea that family members often take on caregiving without preparation or training, participants learn what dementia is and how it affects the individual and develop skills on how to interact and communicate with a person with dementia. Caregivers will also find out where to go for resources and services to help support themselves, as well as the person with dementia.

This six-week course will be held on Monday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 15 through Sept. 26. Sessions include training, interactive exercises and discussion. Between sessions, caregivers have readings, exercises and assignments to complete and report back to the group on the home activities. These trainings are sponsored by the Office of Elder Services, Department of Health and Human Services and funded by a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.

Preregistration is required. To obtain more information or to register, call Becca or Liz at 1-800-282-0764, ext. 127 or 139.
