100 years ago, 1911

George W. Spencer was yesterday sent back to his home in Readville, Mass., after having been in the city a little over a week. Shortly after his arrival here, he applied to overseer Cronin of the poor farm for help and was sent to the City Farm. He was considered weak mentally, as well as physically, and was penniless. As he was dissatisfied with his lot, it was decided to send him back to Readville.

50 years ago, 1961

John A. Aliberti, well-known Lewiston High School history and economics instructor, will succeed Nathaniel J. Crowley as the city’s recreation director when Crowley leaves at the end of the current season.

Aliberti, a resident of Webber Ave., was appointed by the Board of Education. During summer months he has served as counselor at summer camps. Crowley, former LHS basketball coach and guidance director, has accepted a position with the Falmouth school department.

25 years ago, 1986

Hammond Lumber will officially open its new addition, a “sunspace” measuring 10 feet by 16 feet, designed with Andersen Windows’ Concept IV technology, on Saturday. Manager Dave Riddle says the new “sunspace” will demonstrate how to save heating dollars and add room to any home by using high-performance glass, thermal mass and heat-transfer equipment.
