WILTON — Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to accept recommendations to remove about 33 percent of the town’s street lights to meet a budget voters approved in June, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said Wednesday.

Residents voted 43-39 at the town meeting to reduce the budget covering street, downtown and traffic lights from $51,800 to $30,000, Irish said. Both selectmen and the Finance Committee had recommended approving the $51,800, she said.

She has spent the last couple of weeks visiting every light site in town twice, sometimes more than that, she said.

Irish said she recommended 103 lights of the 314 in town that could be shut off to nearly meet the budget voters approved. No lights downtown will be removed, she said.

She reviewed the lights and based her recommendations on safety as the No. 1 concern, she said. Lights on corners, around knolls and at intersections were left on in most cases, Irish said.

Some remaining lights will be moved to better illuminate the area if one is shut off. Lights on private roads were recommended to be turned off because they were not on town property. Someone living on that road can make arrangements with Central Maine Power Co. to keep a light on by paying at a cost of about $12 to $15 a month. Some lights on quiet streets with maybe only one or two residences on them were also recommended to be shut off.

The lights approved for shut off won’t be switched off immediately, Irish said. CMP has up to three months to complete the work.

Those to be shut off have been marked with blue tape.
