FARMINGTON — State and local police are continuing their investigation into the death of 81-year-old Grace Burton, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Monday.

Burton died from stab wounds she received during an invasion of her home on Fairbanks Road early Tuesday, June 21.

There have been 13 homicides this year, seven of them since June 6, McCausland said last week.

Police have interviewed hundreds of people but so far have not made an arrest in the case.

Burton called emergency dispatchers at about 1 a.m. the morning her home was invaded and she was attacked. She died later that morning at Central Maine Medical Center as a result of the stab wounds she sustained.

Police have said Burton was stabbed in the head and torso. They have urged the public to call them with information and said Burton’s attacker likely sustained cuts to his hands and fingers.

Blood evidence from the attacker was collected at the scene and DNA samples have been run through both Maine and national criminal database records in search of a match.

Before her death Burton was able to describe her attacker as a slight man with a thin mustache.

Police said the suspect entered Burton’s first-floor home at the Margaret Chase Smith Apartment complex on Fairbanks Road via a back window.

A man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and carrying a black backpack was seen in the vicinity the night of the attack, and police have been looking to question this person.

Detectives continue to appeal to the public for information on the case.
