MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society has recently been given several interesting artifacts and scrapbooks which will be on display at the historical society for the Community Day Celebration on Saturday, June 25.

Richard and Betty Clukey of Mechanic Falls bestowed a sign to the society which had been in their barn when they moved into town in June 1958. The sign simply reads C.T.D. Crockett on one side and Carriage Mfg. on the other. The sign is about 18 inches wide and 15 feet long. Through their own research the Clukeys learned that their property once belonged to a Charles T.D. Crockett who purchased the land from John Richardson and Mercy Jane on Dec. 29, 1873.

The Clukeys also presented to the society a glass-enclosed sign which advertised spool silk. It hung in Morrell’s Market which currently houses Cummings Insurance Company.

Also available for public viewing will be postcards, photos and newspaper articles about Tripp Lake in Poland. These items date from the turn of the century through the mid 20th century. Postcards featuring Summit Springs Hotel, Poland, will also be available for inspection. This scrapbook was donated to the Mechanic Falls Town Library by Joanne Hutchison.

There will also be a scrapbook detailing the activities of Future Homemakers of America of Maine from the 1950s and 1960s. There are a score of photographs and articles about this former high school organization.
