AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Texting while driving will soon be against the law in Maine.

Gov. Paul LePage on Friday signed legislation that outlaws text messaging while driving. The law takes effect 90 days after the present legislative session ends. Violators will pay fines starting at $100.

LePage says that all too often, drivers are seen with one hand on the wheel and their attention diverted from the road to a cell phone. He says the safest driving is done when a driver’s full attention is to the road and their surroundings.

The new law succeeds a distracted driving law, which passed in 2009.
