Memorial Day weekend rains turned the Androscoggin River at Bethel under the Route 2 bridge into muddy brown water that continuously overran its banks as late as Tuesday morning.
The rain-swollen waters of the Androscoggin River rush headlong over a long tree trunk that was caught against a Route 2 bridge abutment on Tuesday morning in Bethel.
Trees ashore and on islands in the Androscoggin River were in danger of going under on Tuesday as high flows from heavy rains in the river’s upper watershed continued to surge through and over the channel in Bethel.
Trees lining the bank of the Androscoggin River near the Route 2 bridge in Bethel were partially submerged after high flows from Memorial Day weekend rains caused the river to jump its banks.
