TURNER — Singer Bryce Libby will perform at the third and final Cabin Fever Concert of the season on Saturday, May 21, at Turner Center Universalist Church.

He will be accompanied by well-known pianist Jerry Ellis.

Libby, a Turner native, comes from a large musical family. Parents Ken and Dorothy, uncles Jack and Jesse, and siblings Linda, Connie, Rhonda and Kevin have entertained at area venues for many years.

Libby studied voice but eschewed a career in classical music, choosing instead to pursue singing as an avocation while completing graduate studies at the University of Connecticut. “For one thing, I was not cut out for the life of the starving artist,” Libby said. “And besides, the music that I had a passion for was the standards of the 1930s and ’40s, the Broadway composers Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter and the Top 40 stuff of the 1950s and ’60s that my parents used to perform in their band.”

Libby performed extensively in musical theater and musical revues in Connecticut and Massachusetts before performing his own show in the cabaret club circuit of New York City. “I found my niche in cabaret,” he said.

“Cabaret, as I studied it, is a genre which emphasizes the singer’s interpretation of the lyric more than the music. This focus on lyric first and music second allows you to perform a range of material in the same program that you couldn’t get away with in any other setting,” Libby said.

The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. upstairs in the church. There will be cookies and beverages downstairs. Donations will go toward maintenance of the church.
