TURNER — Selectmen discussed awarding the town’s Boston Post Cane at their Monday night meeting. The 14-caret-gold-headed cane will be given to the town’s oldest resident at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, in a ceremony at the Masonic Lodge.

Ebony canes were given to Turner and 699 other New England Towns in 1909 by Edwin A. Grozier, publisher of the Boston Post newspaper. The canes were to be awarded to the oldest resident of each town for use during their lifetime. While many other towns have lost their canes over the years, Turner still has its version and continues the tradition of awarding it to their oldest resident.

In other business, board Chairman Angelo Terreri said two volunteers are needed for one-year appointments to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Those interested in serving their town should contact Town Manager Eva Leavitt.

Selectmen considered a request that school buses be allowed to park at the Fire Station during football season. It was determined that the buses could be parked at the rear of the lot next to the stone wall without interfering with Fire Department activities. Selectman Ralph Caldwell pointed out that due to the likelihood of fall rains, the area would need to be graveled before it could be safely used. He said he did not recommend charging for the use of the area.

Selectmen discussed the difficulty the town has had in getting a resident to clean up a non-complying junkyard. One option considered was to ask voters to authorize the town to clean up the site. The town could then put a lien on the property for the cost of the cleanup, but they could not foreclose on the property because another lien holder has a superior claim.

At the annual town meeting voters approved a motion to spend up to $10,000 for fireworks for the July 3 and 4 celebration of the town’s 225th anniversary. Due to the wording of the motion, excess money in this account can not be used for other expenses of the committee planning the celebration. Selectmen voted to loan the committee $4,000 from their contingency account to cover the cost of putting on the celebration.

Volunteers and sponsors are still needed for the celebration. Selectmen’s Secretary Sandra Philipon said a fund has been set up at the Town Office to receive donations for the event.
