LIVERMORE FALLS — Contractors will start digging on Route 4 on Monday, May 9, to begin reconstructing a 1.1 mile section of roadway, installing new sewer and water mains along the way.

The project will begin at the intersection of Union and Main streets in Livermore Falls to install the first section of water main to Green Street, project superintendent Kevin Pulkkinen of Pratt & Sons Inc. in Minot said Friday.

Then contractors will start installing new sewer mains from Bridge Street on, he said. Storm drainage will also be done during the project.

The Maine Department of Transportation portion of the project will run from Bridge Street on Route 4 to Pineau Street in Jay.

Pratt & Sons won the contract for the joint project with the MDOT, towns of Livermore Falls and Jay, and the Livermore Falls Water District for a bid of $6.3 million.

There will be no detours during the project, Pulkkinen said. One lane will be opened at all times, he said.

Obviously it is a congested area, he said, and it will be a challenging job. Hopefully the townspeople will be receptive to the work, Pulkkinen said.

“We will try to minimize any disruptions,” he said.

Jay Town Manager Ruth Cushman said she will be writing a column to appear in the Livermore Falls Advertiser on the progress throughout the project. The project is expected to be complete in October 2012.

Cushman said she will also send the information to the Sun Journal, Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce. It will also be put on both towns’ websites, Cushman said.

Cushman, Livermore Falls Town Manager Kristal Flagg and others will attend weekly Thursday morning meetings with contractors to get updates on what is going on.

The construction field office will be at the old town office in Jay on Route 4, and the utilities office will be across the street at the Jay Fire Station No. 2, Cushman said.
