WINTHROP — Nationally acclaimed wildlife writer Susan Hand Shetterly will appear at the Bailey Public Library in Winthrop on Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.

Shetterly will speak about her latest book, “Settled in the Wild,” a collection of distinctive and revelatory essays about her life spent in and along Maine’s rugged woods and coasts. The book was chosen for the nationally respected Indie Next List in February 2010, and Publisher’s Weekly called Shetterly’s eye for poetic detail “exquisite.”

The book explores accounts of how Shetterly lived alongside her husband and two young children without electricity in a cabin in Maine; her explorations with Chac, a raven she rehabilitated; fruitlessly shielding her goldfish from a vigilant kingfisher; discovering escaped farm-raised salmon trying to live in natural waters; and defending the land against inevitable development.

A former wild bird rehabilitator, Shetterly has written about wildlife and wild lands for more than 20 years. She is the author of the essay collection “The New Year’s Owl,” and several children’s books. She was a contributing writer to Down East, Audubon Magazine, Yankee and Maine Times.
