BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin in the murder trial of a Maine man charged with shooting his father to death.
After the jury is chosen, a separate hearing will likely be held Monday to determine if Perley Goodich Jr. of Newport is competent to stand trial in the October 2009 shooting death of his father, Perley Goodrich Sr.
Goodrich’s attorney, Jeffrey Silverstein, says he doesn’t intend to deny that his client shot his father to death and assaulted his mother.
Instead, he will focus on Goodrich’s history of mental illness, including that he sought treatment in the days before the shooting.
Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson says he expects the trial to begin next week.
