A 20-year-old was killed today by being caught in a planer in the machine shop of the Bath Iron Works while inspecting his work on a gland box. This is the first fatal accident which ever occurred in this machine shop.

50 years ago, 1961

Gov. Reed on Wednesday signed a bill to make it a crime to refuse to yield a telephone party line for an emergency call.

The act, which will take effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns, also will make it unlawful to demand the use of a party line on the pretext of an emergency.

It defines emergency as a situation in which the life or property is in danger and the prompt summoning of aid is essential. The penalty for violation will be a fine up to $300, jail up to one month, or both.

25 years ago, 1986

Les Indiens Snowshoe Club will hold its annual parade Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

Units will form at Le Montagnard Club on Lisbon Street at 10:30, then march down Lisbon Street to Chestnut Street, then to Lincoln Street. They will proceed on Lincoln to Cedar, then to the parking lot opposite St. Mary’s Church.

Groups will meet later at Les Indiens Club for food and dancing.
