BELFAST — Police say a Maine man who went to jail for attacking his girlfriend’s 78-year-old mother is back in jail after he was caught hiding in the basement of the elderly woman’s home in Belfast.

Police say 53-year-old Mark Belleisle was arrested at about 5 a.m. Monday and charged with violating a protection order.

Belfast police say the woman fled her home after hearing Belleisle. She went for help at a neighbor’s house, but she ended up spending time barefoot in the snow before she could get that help.

Responding police found Belleisle in the basement.

The Bangor Daily News says Belleisle was convicted of assaulting the same woman so badly in February 2010 she needed to go to a hospital for treatment.
