NEW GLOUCESTER — A public hearing Wednesday on the proposed 2011-12 municipal budget drew two dozen residents who wanted more detailed information.
Residents said projected revenues and spending requests need clarification to help them understand the projected gross budget of between $2,572,001 and $2,593,251. So far, the revenues, which determine the net municipal budget to be raised by taxation, are uncertain.
Also, SAD 15’s assessment is unknown. School officials are expected to unveil a draft budget on April 4 at the selectmen meeting.
Resident Beth Sutherland said the proposed 3.9 percent increase projected by SAD 15 would have no impact on taxes locally.
Budget Committee Chairman Peter J. Turner took questions from residents seeking clarification on proposed health insurance cost-saving plans, wages in recreation and public works funding. Some wondered if adequate funding was projected for unforeseen higher costs, such as escalating fuel costs.
“I have no objection to anything in this budget,” resident Penny Hilton said.
However, she said, “There are big holes in the information given to us. We need the whole picture. When will there be the most complete document available before deadlines pass?”
Budget Committee members requested that revenue sheets include the past year’s actual figures to compare with projected revenues for next year.
Complete budget packets are expected by the end of the month, Town Manager Sumner Field III said.
