PORTLAND — The Office of the U.S. Attorney announced in a press release Thursday that James M. Cameron, Esq., 48, of Hallowell, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 16 years in federal prison, to be followed by 10 years of supervised release.
In August, Cameron, a former assistant attorney general in Maine was found guilty of 13 counts of transporting, receiving and possessing child pornography.
Cameron has been in jail since his conviction.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Cameron was found guilty of four types of activity over a 17-month period between July 2006 and December 2007, including uploading child pornography images and videos from a computer in his residence to Yahoo! photo albums and briefcases he created; sending and receiving child pornography over Google Hello, a free chat and file sharing computer program, using laptop computers he carried while on trips and family vacations; receiving e-mails containing child pornography; and possession of child pornography.
According to the court, the offenses involved the handling of almost 600 child pornography images, including depictions of prepubescent children, sadistic and other violent conduct.
From August 1990 until April 2008, Cameron worked as an assistant attorney general, primarily handling drug prosecutions.
