AUBURN — A Turner man was arrested Thursday night, nearly 24 hours after he allegedly led police on a chase through Auburn.
Matthew Niemi, 22, was arrested on Center Street when police tracked him down after a day of searching.
Niemi, who was involved in a similar chase a year ago, was charged with driving to endanger, habitual driving with a suspended license, criminal speed, eluding police, violating conditions of release and a slew of less severe traffic charges, including running red lights, driving after dark without headlights and illegal attachment of plates.
The chase began just before midnight on Wednesday. Police said Niemi refused to stop for officers who followed him from Center Street out to the roads around Lost Valley Ski Area before breaking off the pursuit early Thursday morning.
Auburn police had identified Niemi while they were pursuing him. Once the chase ended, they began searching for Niemi in locations he is known to frequent. Police Lt. Scott Watkins said officers developed leads in their search, which led them to Center Street, where Niemi was arrested at about 9 p.m.
Niemi was arrested on similar charges a year ago after leading Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase through the area. He has an extensive criminal history, most of it related to driving.
He was being booked into the Androscoggin County Jail late Thursday night.
