OQUOSSOC — The town’s first fly-in is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, at Bald Mountain Camps on Mooselookmeguntic Lake.

The event, which includes a barbecue, is to benefit Friends of Mountain Aviation and the Spanish Club at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School. Admission is free but donations will be accepted for those organizations, resort owner Stephen Philbrick said.

As of Wednesday, he said he was expecting 20 planes. Of course, if the weather is bad, it will probably only be the local fliers, he said.

The planes will either be able to land on the snow or a plowed runway on the lake, he said.

The event starts at 11 a.m. and will run to 4:30 or 5 p.m.

Snowmobile access is from ITS 84, he said.

Motor vehicle access is via Route 4 north through Oquossoc and take a left onto Bald Mountain Road, Philbrick said.

Fliers plan to bomb a target on the frozen lake as part of the activities.

The barbecue that starts at 11 a.m. will include burgers, chili, beans, steak, chicken and other foods.

The resort is also the lunch spot for Busch North Scene Poker Run for charity, Philbrick said. It is an annual snowmobile ride that includes racing stars from NASCAR’s Busch North Series, he said.
