Raises for nonunion staff

Issue: Ten nonunion staffers in the Town Office, at the transfer station and at the rescue service have gone three years without pay raises. Selectmen unanimously approved a proposal to increase wages and benefits by 5 percent in the next budget.

The scoop: The total increase amounts to just over $15,000.

Up next: Selectmen will go over all parts of the proposed budget at 6 p.m. workshops on Feb. 15, 16 and 17 before voting on their recommendations Feb. 22.

Next winter

Issue: In January 2010 the town started prepping for winter 2010-11 and locked in a price early for heating oil at $2.499 a gallon. Turner uses about 10,000 gallons a year.

The scoop: Preparing for 2011-12 is under way.

Up next: Town Manager Eva Leavitt will begin shopping around.

Odds and ends

Issue: The board appointed Deputy Town Clerk Rebecca Allaire as the new registrar of voters. She replaces Joyce Moulin.

Issue: Selectmen approved a 50-cent-an-hour pay raise for two of the town’s three full-time emergency medical technicians. Both had recently upgraded their licenses.

Issue: Turner turns 225 this year. The Turner Public Library might do something to celebrate. Leavitt agreed to look into the cost of fireworks.

Issue: The board approved Public Works spending $11,328 on a 2006 Chevy truck, replacing a 2000 model in poor shape; and spending up to $4,722 to repair a JD excavator.
