LEWISTON — The one thing perhaps more satisfying for the St. Dom’s girls’ hockey team than scoring three more goals than it did last time it faced Lewiston? The fact that this time, the Saints didn’t allow any.
Marisa Zamrock netted six goals and added two assists, Sophie Goulet had a pair of goals and a pair of helpers, Kayla McLellan added two goals and an assist and Nicole Keaney stopped all 13 shots she faced to lead St. Dom’s to a convincing 11-0 win over Lewiston at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday.
“It was good for our goaltending to stay focused,” St. Dom’s coach Don Boucher said. “With the low amount of shots she gets, for her to focus the whole game, that was good for us. She didn’t have that many shots, but there were some tough ones, and she made the saves.”
Zamrock, meanwhile, seems to like playing against her former team. The former Blue Devil had eight points Saturday, and had four the last time the teams squared off back in December for a total of 12 in two games.
“I don’t think it matters who we’re playing, she likes to score,” Boucher said. “She’s probably been our best all-around player here the last little while.”
The Blue Devils, meanwhile, struggled from the start of the contest, and pinned themselves behind the 8-ball early.
“We obviously didn’t start the way we wanted,” Lewiston coach Ron Dumont said. “We had trouble getting our legs going, and that’s been a problem for us lately.”
The Saints took advantage, getting goals from Kayla McLellan, Lauren Ratsep and Zamrock (twice) to build a 4-0 lead through the first frame.
In the second, the Devils and Saints played more evenly. Lewiston launched six shots in Keaney’s direction while the Saints managed just nine against Blue Devils starter Brianna Lajoie.
“The second period we got a lot better,” Dumont said. “We had good use of the speed and everything. It was a much more competitive game from our standpoint.”
“We started playing everybody, everyone got into the game,” Boucher said.
The Saints added a pair to their total in the middle frame, too, one each from Goulet and McLellan. Near the end of the frame, officials whistled a pair of St. Dom’s skaters for playing with earrings on, and handed the Devils a power play heading into the final frame.
“After that, we didn’t want to take any chances,” Boucher said. “We settled back down and went back to playing our game.”
The Saints continued to roll their top line of Ratsep, McLellan and Zamrock through to the final buzzer. Zamrock scored four of her goals in that final frame, all in succession, and Goulet capped the scoring in the final minute of play.
