LEWISTON — Shawn McKeown, 17, of Lewiston, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His project consisted of rejuvenating the Lewiston High School band room.
The band room, adjoined practice rooms and music library had been cluttered and disorganized for several years. McKeown felt it hindered the music education of many students.
He planned, organized and led a group of 20 student volunteers to clean, organize and paint the band room. Altogether, they spent approximately 147 hours completing the project.
McKeown has been a member of Boy Scout Troop 116 for the past six years and is officially the last Scout in the Abnaki District of achieve the rank of Eagle in Boy Scouting’s 100th year.
As a music student at Lewiston High School, McKeown participated for four years in concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble and jazz trio. In his junior and senior years, he was elected to be president of the concert band.
McKeown’s connection with music started at age 7 when he began taking piano lessons. Today, he is a freshman at the University of Southern Maine where he is majoring in music education. He aspires to become a high school band director so he can share his love of music with students.
