LEWISTON — Work replacing the Maine Turnpike’s Lisbon Street overpass will continue as crews plan to close the road for several hours overnight Tuesday, Dec. 21.
Crews will close Lisbon Street in both directions beginning at 10 p.m., said Charlie Myers of the HNTB engineering company.
Workers will park a crane on the Lisbon Street shoulder and will use a truck carrying steel beams on the turnpike’s overpass. The crane will pluck the beams off the truck and lower them down under the bridge, where they will be fastened to newly cast concrete piers.
Crews will be working on five bridge spans all next week, but only two will require closing Lisbon Street.
“They’re scheduled to start Monday with the first two spans, then do the next ones on Tuesday,” Myers said. “If all goes well, they should finish installing all of the spans by the end of the week. That’s assuming there are no hiccups, and the weather cooperates.”
Lisbon Street should be reopened by 2 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, Myers said.
The work is part of a yearlong project on the turnpike’s overpass, replacing and upgrading the bridges on the northbound and southbound turnpike travel lanes at Lisbon Street.
Myers said the work should be finished next summer, with new piers, steel beams, a deck and paving in place.
