WINTHROP — Monmouth used a smothering press to wear down Winthrop in the second half en route to a 51-34 MVC boys’ basketball victory Monday night.
Leading 20-16 at halftime, Monmouth pulled away in the third quarter by forcing turnovers and outscoring the Ramblers 23-6.
Senior forward Roger Bachelder led all scorers with 19 points while classmate Robby Neal added 17 points, including three 3-pointers for the Mustangs (2-0).
Chase Hopkins and Billy Gordon paced the Ramblers (1-1) with nine points each.
Telstar 62, Madison 36
BETHEL — Corey Howard led Telstar wirth 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-36 MVC boys’ basketball win Monday over Madison.
Elek Pew and Dan Vaughn each added 10 points for the Rebels (2-0). Pew hauled down eight rebounds. Dan Whitney added nine points. Ben Field had seven.
Telstar led by nine points after the first quarter and enjoyed a 28-16 advantage at the half.
Ian Hartigan topped Madison (0-2) with 11 points.
Hall-Dale 42, St. Dom’s 30
FARMINGDALE — Nine different players hit the scoring column for Hall-Dale in a 42-30 MVC boys’ basketball win over St. Dom’s.
Sam Shepherd paced Hall-Dale (1-1) with nine points. Ben Shepherd added eight.
Kurt Johnson led all scorers with 11 points for the Saints (1-1). Joe Bryant chipped in 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Boothbay 75, Lisbon 34
BOOTHBAY — Senior Dan Dickinson sank a school record seven 3-pointers, pouring in a game high 25 points to lead Boothbay to a 75-34 MVC boys’ basketball triumph over Lisbon.
Jordan Caron added seven points and 16 rebounds for Boothbay (2-0). Mike Degou paced the Greyhounds (0-2) with nine points. Matt Hussey chipped in with seven.
Girls’ hockey
Hebron 3, Gunnery 2
SOUTHFIELD, Conn — Sarah Grover broke a tie with just over four minutes left in regulation to lift Hebron over Gunnery 3-2 in girls’ hockey action.
Grover’s second goal of the game came just seven seconds after Gunnery tied the score on an assist from Jackie Aaskov.
Chelsea Boucher netted the game’s first score late in the first period. Grover added another goal with her first score of the game midway through the second period giving the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead after two periods.
Gunnery rallied in the third period tying the score before Grover’s heroics. Kelli Klassen turned away 28 shots in net for Hebron. Kirsten Boutilier turned away 32 shots for the Connecticut school.
Girls’ basketball
Hebron 29, Pine Tree 10
HEBRON — Janelle Bradish poured in 14 points to lead Hebron to a 29-10 victory over Pine Tree Academy 29-10 in girls’ basketball.
Bradish, a senior center, scored four of her 14 points from the free-throw line. Senior guard Kaitlyn Paiton chipped in eight points for the Lumberjacks (1-1). Gentille Sandy paced Pine Tree (0-2) with eight points.
