FARMINGTON — High waters from heavy rains flooded fields around the Sandy River and closed the Intervale to traffic Monday morning in Farmington.
Shortly after 11 a.m. Route 4, known as the Intervale, in front of Cumberland Farms was closed to traffic, said Tim Hardy, Franklin County Emergency Management director.
Traffic was diverted up the Farmington Falls Road to Maple Avenue then down Prescott Street to Main, he said.
The Front Street from McDonald’s to the Farmer’s Union was closed about an hour earlier due to high water across the road between NotifyMD’s parking lot and Gifford’s Ice Cream.
Hardy wasn’t sure when to expect the river to crest or how much rain was still expected. He had been out on the road checking on flooding since 4:30 a.m., he said.
Waters from Temple Stream in West Farmington had covered the fields around it and Hardy said there is quite a bit of flooding in the Strong area around the Sandy River.
Parts of Oxford County were also under water Monday including Hosmer Field in Rumford.
As the Sandy River rose and flooded over water crept closer to the Park and Ride lot and Rite-Aid on the Intervale.
