Board: Turner selectmen

Met: Monday night

Town meeting set

Issue: Selectmen picked April 2, 2011, for town meeting.

The scoop: April 1 was set as the date to go to the polls to vote on school board, Budget Committee and Board of Selectmen members.

Up next: Look for nomination papers to come out in January.

Dumped junk

Issue: A landowner on Plains Road discovered that someone, perhaps using a 1-ton truck, had dumped a load of junk with metal, carpeting and oil cans on their farm road, about 50 feet off the public right of way. The items, properly disposed of, likely would have been accepted at the Turner transfer station.

The scoop: In the past, Public Works has cleared debris dumped in the roadside right of way. This landowner asked for Public Works’ help clearing this junk.

Up next: Selectmen opted to stick with past practice — the junk was too far off the road to get Public Works to help. The landowner was encouraged to contact law enforcement.

More efficient sand

Issue: With a four-member Public Works crew and some part-time help, the town is looking at ways to make its six winter plow routes more efficient.

The scoop: One idea: storing a pile of salt and sand at the north end of town.

Up next: Town Manager Eva Leavitt is researching options.

New gravel pit acreage

Issue: Ronald Poulin of Lisbon had offered the town 23.7 acres as a gift; his land abutted the town’s gravel pit on Pit Road.

The scoop: By a show of hands, a majority of the 13 registered voters who turned out at a special town meeting Monday accepted the gift.
