Beginning today the increase in passenger rates on the Boston and Maine R.R. goes into effect and tickets from Lewiston to Boston will be $3.40 instead of $3.20. The cause of the increase is generally understood to be because of the advance given a short time ago to the employees of the road.

50 years ago, 1960

The Lou-Rod Candy Co. of Lewiston has purchased Seavey’s Sweets Co., it was announced yesterday by John S. Seavey, operator of the candy company for 36 years.

Seavey said that Roger Stearns, president of Lou-Rod Candy Co., plans to consolidate the two firms and manufacture of Seavey’s Needhams will continue under the new management.

Alcide Marcotte, who has been the candy maker for Seavey for 30 years, will continue under the new firm. He has been in the candy-making business for 56 years.

25 years ago, 1985

The Lewiston City Council will consider many changes proposed for the city’s traffic schedule, including eliminating several parking spaces at Lisbon and Rosedale streets and stop-sign changes at several intersections.

Facing a light agenda for Tuesday night’s regular meeting, the council will consider the changes proposed by Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscom and Public Works Director Normand R. Lamie.
