PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Early tabulations show a referendum calling for a full-blown casino with slot machines and table games in western Maine is extremely close.

With 12 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, 53 percent of voters favored allowing a casino in Oxford, with 47 percent opposed.

Black Bear Entertainment LLC says it wants to build a $165 million four-season casino and resort in Oxford that would support thousands of jobs, pump tens of millions of dollars into the economy and generate more than $60 million in tax revenue.

Opponents say a casino would actually suck money and jobs out of the local economy, while increasing crime and gambling addiction.
