BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College’s department of theater and dance will open its 2010-2011 season with Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical “A Little Night Music.”

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-6, in Pickard Theater on the college campus.

Based on the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night,” “A Little Night Music” is a tale of mismatched lovers, jealous rivals and youthful passions. The show features one of Sondheim’s greatest scores.

Fredrik Egerman is happily married to 17-year-old Anne. Anne, however, has been a virgin for the entirety of the marriage, and Fredrik is becoming restless. To spice up his life, he decides to see an old lover, Desiree Armfeldt, who is involved with the married Count Carl-Magnus. Desiree is growing tired of her life, longs to settle down and decides to pursue the love of Fredrick. She invites him (and Anne) to her estate for the weekend, in hopes of seeing him alone. However, when Carl-Magnus and his wife arrive as well, things begin to get farcical.
