LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen voted Monday to allow the fire chief to sell the Fire Department’s 1972 Bean engine and a 1946 Willys open-cab Jeep.

The trucks will be put out to bid, including on the Internet on a truck collectors site.

Chief Gerry Pineau said the department has realigned its equipment. He had proposed selling the two vehicles in July.

Pineau requested that the money from the sales be earmarked for the department in a reserve account to replace what is being sold with newer equipment.

He would like to sell the 1946, four-wheel drive in two pieces — the poly tank and the Jeep, he said. Pineau took the truck out of service because it had no seat belts and an open cab with no roll bar.

The intent is to replace the Jeep with a used four-wheel drive pickup for about $4,000. Firefighters would make the truck so it could go into the woods, Pineau said.

“This is a work truck,” he said.

Selectmen approved the sale of equipment and asked that Town Manager Jim Chaousis research how the money could go back into a Fire Department account.

Resident Ron Chadwick suggested during public session that the fire chief do some research and put a minimum bid on the vehicles. He also suggested the Willys be put out to bid as a whole unit to try and get the best price.

Chaousis was not at the meeting due to attending the International City/County Management Association annual conference out of state.

In other business, selectmen voted to change Foundry Road to one way from behind the town office to Shuy Corner for a pumpkin and jack-‘o-lantern display the evening of Thursday, Oct. 28, and the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 29. Troy Pomeroy is putting on the community event on the Androscoggin River side of Foundry Road. According to Chaousis’ memo to the board, Pomeroy also wants to stage pumpkins behind the gate of the sewer treatment plant.

Demeray said he could not see any harm in it as long as it doesn‘t cost the town any money, including more police coverage.

Selectmen suggested that plant Superintendent Kent Mitchell be asked about the latter, and if he has no problem with it, then it could happen.

In another matter, selectmen also voted to allow the American Legion Post 10 Auxiliary to use the Geneva Hodgkins Memorial Park for a Luminaries for Loved Ones program on Veterans Day. They also approved the organization’s request to use the Treat Memorial Library conference room and waive the rental fee for the event.

The board also voted to hold a public hearing on the General Assistance Ordinance at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the town office.

The town has received 25 to 35 applications for the town mechanic and is still accepting applications, police administrative assistant Amanda Leclerc told the board. She was taking minutes for Chaousis.

One round of interviews have been conducted and the plan is to hire somebody by the end of October to be ready for work for mid November, Chaousis’ memo stated.
