FARMINGTON — The members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge Americanism Committee have selected the theme “Why I am Proud to be an American” for the 2010-2011 Grand Lodge Americanism Essay Contest.
The essay contest starts with local Lodges, progresses through District and State levels and ends with the national winners. The contest gives school children in grades five to eight the opportunity to express views on their pride in America.
On the national level, first place winners in each division will receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. Second place winners will receive a $500 bond and third place winners receive a $250 bond. The Farmington Elks Lodge will also present the first place winners with a $25 certificate to a local book store.
Local school districts will be sent contest information by mail.
Eligible participants must be students enrolled in the fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth grade at the time of the contest. Other requirement information will be available at local schools or by calling the Farmington Elks Lodge at 778-6761. Essays must be submitted to the Lodge on or before January 10, 2011.
