Caleb Castonguay’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Lachance with 3.2 seconds remaining in the first half Friday night might have saved Maranacook’s football season.
Winless on the year and shut out on the night to that point, the Black Bears never trailed again in a 30-27 Western Class C win over previously undefeated Livermore Falls at Ricky Gibson Memorial Field of Dreams in Readfield.
Maranacook (1-2) took advantage of Livermore Falls’ fumble on a punt to produce the crucial touchdown. The Black Bears recovered at the Andies’ 46-yard line with 58 seconds to go.
Castonguay then threw a 16-yard completion to Luke Emery prior to the hookup with Lachance.
Emery’s two-point conversion rush gave Maranacook an 8-7 halftime lead. That increased to 16-7 when Emery scored from 42 yards out and rushed for another two points.
Steve Michaud’s 9-yard TD run got Livermore Falls (2-1) back within three late in the third quarter. Emery got the Black Bears back in business with a 7-yard TD.
Kyle Evans’ 44-yard scoring jaunt and another Emery two-pointer made it 30-13 early in the fourth.
Livermore Falls rallied on Alex Rose’s second and third TD rushes of the night, from 4 and 6 yards to go with his 7-yarder in the first quarter.
The Andies had one last chance with 30 seconds to go at their own 33, but Emery picked off Nate Hamblin to seal it.
Emery carried 28 times for 119 yards. Castonguay was 4-for-9 through the air for 76 yards for Maranacook.
Rose had 14 carries for 54 yards and Brent Buote 11 for 53 to lead the Andies.
