LEWISTON — Work on the Maine Turnpike bridge will shut down traffic on Lisbon Street overnight Thursday.
State road crews will remove two steel beams under the turnpike’s northbound lane between Sabattus and Lewiston as part of an ongoing effort to widen the road, resident engineer Charles Myers said.
The work is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Thursday and finish by 3 a.m. Friday. Lisbon Street traffic will be stopped in both directions for the duration of the work.
Work widening both north and southbound lanes of the turnpike began last winter.
“We’ve finished what we needed on the southbound side, so now we’re doing the same work on the northbound side,” he said. The work should not interfere with turnpike traffic.
Myers said he expects the bridge work will continue through the winter. It’s scheduled to wrap up in June 2011.
“There still will be occasional closings and other work going forward,” Myers said. “We will have flaggers on hand when we need them.”
