PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A civil trial is due to get under way for two Maine police officers alleged to have used excessive force when taking a man into custody three years ago.

The civil trial in U.S. District Court in Portland of Wells police Officer Jacob Titcomb and Ogunquit Officer Matthew Buttrick is due to get under way Tuesday. The trial is expected to last three days.

Michael Fortin is arguing the two officers assaulted him and permanently injured his left leg during the May 26, 2007 incident in Ogunquit, making it impossible for him to earn a living.

The officers counter Fortin was drunk and under investigation for assaulting his girlfriend.

The Portland Press Herald says Fortin is seeking financial compensation for knee injuries and punitive damages.
