FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — A New Jersey paddler is wrapping up a final 17-mile stretch en route to becoming the first woman to complete the Northern Forest Canoe Trail on her own.
A year after New Jersey’s Mike Stavola set a speed record, Cathy Mumford, of Colts Neck, N.J., set out to make a little history for herself this summer on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
Mumford began paddling June 19 in Old Forge, N.Y., and she’s due to finish her 740-mile journey Monday afternoon in Fort Kent, Maine, after crossing Vermont, southern Quebec, New Hampshire.
She nearly had to switch kayaks when she entered Maine’s Allagash Wilderness Waterway late last week. A donated kayak was at the ready because there are specific regulations governing what’s allowed on the waterway, but her trusty kayak pasted muster — by an inch.
