In a jail situation, where corrections officers are often short-handed, there cannot be time for pranks. An emergency, such as an escape attempt or a fire, would demand the availability of every staff member.

Patrick Gorham, on at least two occasions, endangered the lives of co-workers and prisoners at the Androscoggin County Jail. To draw a paycheck for his misdeeds shows chutzpah. To appeal his termination demonstrates gall and an utter lack of shame (Sun Journal, July 24).
