BETHEL — Registration is still open for the 19th annual Maine State Triathlon, the longest running triathlon in western Maine, scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, and for the third annual Maine State Kid’s Triathlon, scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31.

Kids, ages 8 to 14 are welcome to sign up by 2 p.m. for the noncompetitive event, with both the start and finish at Angevine Park on the North Road. Expected are up to 100 participants for the 200-yard swim, 3-mile bike and 1-mile run. A $25 entry fee (less for families with three or more children entering) guarantees an event T-shirt and finish medal.

Entries are welcome for the Maine State Triathlon up until Saturday, at the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce office or by calling 824-2282. Adults will gather on race day across from the Bethel Inn Lakehouse facility on Songo Pond, Route 5 south of Bethel. Race fee of $70 for individuals and $110 for teams guarantees an event T-shirt to the first 300 competitors.

A sprint triathlon, the distances include a 1K swim in Songo Pond, 24K bike and a 5.8K run. Prizes will be awarded to the top three in each of 10 age groups, as well as Novice (first time triathletes,) Athena (women 150-plus pounds) and Clydesdale (men 200-plus pounds), as well as teams and Aquabike (swim and bike only).

The 2009 event attracted competitors from 10 states, as far away as Arizona. For more information or to register, call the chamber office at 824-2282. On line registration is available at www.active.com
