AUGUSTA (AP) — Gov. John Baldacci says Maine is facing more difficult budget choices in the months ahead.

In his weekly radio address, Baldacci says that despite deep cuts in the last budget, it looks like the Legislature will have to slash even more after it returns in January.

The governor’s asked his department heads to submit ideas for a new round of cuts, but he says no decisions have been made yet.

Baldacci says that while the situation is serious, he’s not going to raise broad-based taxes to balance the budget.

Education and human services account for about 80 percent of the state spending plan.
