BIDDEFORD (AP) — More will soon be known about the future of a southern Maine trash-to-energy plant that’s long been the target of public criticism because of its odors, size and location.

A news conference Wednesday afternoon is planned to give more information about the status of Casella Waste Systems’ Maine Energy Recovery Co. plant in Biddeford.

Last spring, Biddeford Mayor Joanne Twomey announced that she and Gov. John Baldacci formed a task force to look into possible sale of the plant, which opened more than two decades ago and serves about 30 communities.

Twomey, state Economic Development Commissioner John Richardson and Casella’s James Bohlig plan a news conference at City Hall to make what they say will be a major announcement about MERC.
