The 2010 Census

April 1, 2010 is Census Day. Every ten years the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a constitutionally-mandated count of everyone living in the United States. This population count determines representation in Congress, boundaries for local legislative districts, and affects the distribution of $300 billion of federal funds each year.

The 2010 Census is a short form only census. The questionnaire is just 10 questions long and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Response to the 2010 Census is required by law, and individual responses are kept strictly confidential.

The Maine State Planning Office has established a statewide Complete Count Committee to help ensure that all Mainers are included in the census count. Local communities are encouraged to establish their own complete count committees as well.

Current news and activities:
The Census Bureau has wrapped up address canvassing operations, which began in April. During address canvassing, census workers went door to door with handheld computers to update the Census Bureau’s address list in preparation for the Decennial Census.
