A frisky young bovine down at Merrow’s slaughterhouse at New Auburn caused some of the men there all sorts of trouble one afternoon this week. The calf, with several others awaiting the “death penalty,” were in a pen in the building which is situated over the river. The calf apparently was aware of the fate awaiting it and making a mighty leap, went out through a window and into the river 20 feet below. Men followed it along on both sides of the river and the calf was finally rescued down opposite the Oak Hill Cemetery and towed ashore by some men in a boat.
