Two of Lewiston’s expert fly-fishermen, Charles Horbury and Henry E. Frost, spent the day at Sand Pond yesterday and caught 41 black bass of even size and making as handsome a string of fish as is usually exhibited. “Bass are now taking to the fly in fine style” remarked one of these fishermen to The Sun, “and so much did we enjoy the sport Friday that we are going to try our luck again Saturday”

50 years ago, 1959

Mrs. Rita P. Gammon, an employee of the Food Town supermarket in Auburn, yesterday received an award as Maine’s 1959 “Checker of the Year.” The annual competition is sponsored by the Supermarket Institute and she is now eligible for regional honors and competition at Atlantic City, N.J., where an international titlist will be picked.

Educators at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute say this year looks like one of the best for graduates seeking work. Preliminary figures indicate that 95 percent of graduates either have jobs or have a choice of jobs. William Vassar, assistant director of the Auburn school, said forms filled out by the students before graduation show that more than 75 percent had jobs and that 20 percent were undecided about which job offer to accept. Another 3 percent plan to continue their education, while a couple are entering the military.
